The Fading of the Marvelous

“[…] The topic is the circle of life. That is nothing very uncommon in dance theatre, which is often concerned with becoming, growing and ephemerality. But what this Canadian choreographer makes of it is outstanding. […] Again and again, [individual dancers] break out of the group, turn off in opposite directions. […] Bathed in sweat and visibly at their physical limits, the dancers finally come to rest and fall into statue-like poses.”

The eternal cycle of life and death has been moulded into dance form by the Canadian choreographer Catherine Gaudet. A confirmed dance-purist, she does without any stage trickery or costumes, relying entirely on the power of five highly concentrated dancers and a signature movement universe that is elaborately devised down to the last gesture and expression. While the mere sight of the dancers’ sculpted bodies evokes many stories leading to this moment, the choreographer adds immense impetus with her pared-down dance language, pointing to further worlds of experience. Gaudet, whose extremely precise and high-powered productions always also explore the unconscious, is an associate artist of the company Daniel Léveillé Danse, which presented their powerful, minimalist creation "Solitudes Solo" at last year’s festival. As a former student of Léveillé, she has – setting out from his grounding – found her own paths and long since become one of the most sought-after representatives of the Canadian dance avant-garde herself.
