“[…] For him [Pierre Rigal] breakdance is not a subject in itself but a natural means of expression for a generation that is looking for a way to the ideals of society; working out ‘standards’. In France they are no more and no less than liberty, equality, fraternity. And so, to a pounding bass, the stage becomes the street, where dancers meet, not to ‘battle’ but to tell of their search.” Braunschweiger Zeitung, 12 September 2012

Toulouse born choreographer and former athlete Pierre Rigal is known to surprise: In Hanover he has previously shown a neck-breaking work with hip hop dancers, a claustrophobic solo and a danced rock concert. Now he is back with his brand new production “Standards” in which he continues to develop his successful work with hip hop dancers. This time with the dynamic energy of eight dancers and hip hop structures, he explores the sense of community within a society. The identity-creating concepts of freedom, equality and fraternity are brought to the stage in the form of the French tricolour and put up for debate by means of dance. In this way, the universal within the individual and vice versa is sought with a playfully light touch. With “Standards” Rigal once again hits a contemporary nerve and comments on issues which concern us now.
