MONJOUR
German premiere
Silvia Gribaudi (IT)

“A good mood is guaranteed in Gribaudi’s performance ‘Monjour’ at the Tanztheater International festival. With unpretentious ease, she and her performers play with dancer clichés and audience expectations. Dressing and undressing, they respond defiantly to intellectually dressed-up voyeurism; a clown’s nose gets stuck to every body part at one point or other and is multiplied by the bucket to make a ball bath.”

“It’s for you” is the motto of Silvia Gribaudi’s “MONJOUR”, which warmly invites the public to get to know five performers and the choreographer herself. Two dancers, two acrobats, and an actor with a gift for comedy celebrate the time-honoured traditions of dance, theatre, pantomime, singing, and acrobatics and pay tribute to the magic of the live stage performance. Their tongue-in-cheek presentations are led by Gribaudi’s spoken offstage directions, which subvert the action on stage with subtle irony. The dynamic and virtuoso performers dance, sing and pose to their hearts’ delight, interacting with the comic drawings by Francesca Ghermandi shown in the background and becoming living cartoons. Gribaudi, in the meantime, maintains contact with the audience, who gain surprising and refreshing insights into theatre and the artist’s life while being thoroughly entertained.
