“This production by Gabriella Carizzo and Frank Chartier is stunningly apocalyptic. It shows how even in the apparent idyll of a fairytale forest, human horrors of abuse and war can lurk. There is shooting, running away and singing – soprano singer Eurudike De Beul is wonderfully weird on a too-small child’s bicycle, performing a stirring Wagner aria that descends into bizarre wailing before a crumbling wall of rock.”

Power to the children! In “Kind” (Dutch/German: child), Peeping Tom, the festival favourites from Belgium, give the young generation a voice. Six virtuoso dancer/singer/actors conjure striking scenes evoking universal themes of childhood. Playing out childhood hopes, fears and fantasies and the eternal search for truth within an elaborate open-air stage set, they trigger a deep and dark firework of associations. This “child” was brought into the world by the choreographers Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier, who have been causing an international sensation with their company ever since its founding in 2000. With a flair for the quintessential and a subtle sense of humour, they create surreal worlds that open a window on to the unconscious. Following on from “Vader” under the aegis of Chartier and “Moeder” directed by Carrizo, “Kind” is the duo’s baby and the third part of the trilogy. It concludes the company’s adventurous voyage into the highs and lows of the microcosm that is family.
