Athens-based choreographer Christos Papadopoulos has been causing a stir on the international dance scene for several years now with his intense, minimalist movement artworks. In “ION” he explores the mechanisms of swarm intelligence, cleverly applied to human relationships, and opened to metaphorical interpretation on various levels. This showpiece of purist kinetics is a meditative experiment for ten dancers, whom Papadopoulos has choreographed as an organic structure, a living system. Like ions in a particle decelerator, the dancers seem to float above the stage floor, going through almost imperceptible transitions and sharpening the viewers’ perceptions. The slightest changes in the movements, music, or lighting have a sensational impact in this subtle and hypnotic work of art, which generates poetry and inspires individual associations.
