CHOR(E)OGRAPHIE / JOURNALISMUS: kurze Stücke by VA Wölfl
NEUER TANZ (DE)
“[…] At the front, rifles turn decoratively on wheels; some of them are brandished by models in sequins. Freeze-frame: shop-window dummy aesthetic. War is fashion, thinks the arts-page writer before chiding himself that Wölfl would laugh at such cultural clichés. Later, electric guitars come to the ready, intoning a lady on pointes, quietly operatically – or repeating the same motif again and again. […] The performers execute this without emotion, eyes cast down. They exit, return in a row and bow perfunctorily as if it were the final curtain. Some audience members clap – nice try. But the show goes on. […]”

No other company has been a more frequent guest at the festival than Düsseldorf’s NEUER TANZ, directed by visual artist VA Wölfl. Under the banner of “full artistic control”, the company’s works operate at the interface of the arts and skilfully defy pigeon-holing as any particular genre. The production “CHOR(E)OGRAPHIE / JOURNALISMUS: kurze stücke” is no exception, but finds uncompromising forms to express the range of themes explored by the company: avant-garde decadence, the art of war and the galant style in music. VA Wölfl and his performers conjure up an iconoclastic riot of projections, pistols and paillettes in front of the stage’s gleaming white cube. Spontaneously varied, each performance is a unique synthesis of the arts that is sure to surprise.
