French choreographer Anne Nguyen is an astute analyst of social interplay. In her latest work, two B-girls and two specialists in popping oscillate between the safety of anonymity within the crowd and the promise of greater freedom in autonomy. The former variant takes place in a group dance at the front of the stage, which is persistently disrupted by dancers spontaneously breaking away into independent spaces. The girls literally step out of line. Familiar hip hop moves are deconstructed and re-formed differently, giving them an individual identity. Having made a bold mark on last year’s festival with the B-girl duet “Yonder Woman”, Nguyen again places hip hop in compelling new contexts in this production. Applying martial arts rules to dance, Nguyen creates a dynamic evening which aptly describes the personal struggle for individuality against the dictate of the masses.
