“[…] It is the extremely poetic story of how a girl trained in classical dance and a virtuoso breakdancer develop a refreshingly new and tongue-in-cheek kind of movement language: The petite Asian dancer incorporates her partner’s tough acrobatics into her butter-soft body language while he assumes her graceful, wave-like arm movements. Every movement is like an electric shock: The dance of the other gives birth to a new dance. […]” Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, 6 September 2012

A man, a woman and a tree – that’s all the production “Monchichi” needs to tell an authentic story of alienation, the search for identity and love. A couple both on stage and in real life, Sébastien Ramirez has Spanish roots and was raised in the South of France and Hyun-Jung Wang was born in Germany to Korean parents. Similarly, their dance backgrounds could hardly be more contrasting: while Ramirez was a B-boy, Wang was classically trained. But they share a fascination for other dance styles and a great love of experimentation. Hence they find their very own movement language in this atmospherically dense work linking and evolving different dance forms in a highly idiosyncratic way. “Monchichi” is a declaration of love to dance and a bold statement against intolerance as well as an example of the great opportunities which the fusion of opposites can hold.
