“[…] The dancers, who remain poised in artful bondage until they are freed by Van den Broek, […] start to move, surprising us with ever new, outlandish movement forms, stylised angular motion sequences and variations on body twitching. They run and suddenly stop. […] It is a maelstrom, an emotional rollercoaster, which is translated into highly dynamic dance and sent firmly and squarely over the front of the stage: fascinating, impressive, unsettling, confusing, and always thrilling. preview TEXT
Intense emotions like devotion, desperation, desire and pain are the metier of Flemish-Dutch choreographer Ann van den Broek. In her captivating work “The Red Piece”, she pulls the (heart-)strings and literally calls the tune, stamping out flamenco-style rhythms with her booted feet. Gradually, the ensemble of three female and three male dancers joins in, responding first as if to a faint impulse before emotion takes hold of their bodies, sparking passions which are finally vented in explosive physicality. The dance sequences, as a group and in highly varied constellations, are propelled by a pulsating, energy-laden force, invigorating and energizing the spectators as well as the dancers. Here, the colour red represents a whole spectrum of moods, which are also reflected in the music performed by the band Dez Mona. This music acts as both motor and anchor in the tumultuous emotional roller-coaster of the piece.
